Leech Lake’s 112,000 acres freeze solid every winter and give up walleye, perch, and crappie in numbers that will make your head spin. If you’ve never ice fished Leech Lake, it belongs on your bucket list.
When to go
Season runs late December through early March. January–February is the sweet spot. Walleye are most active at dawn and dusk.
What you’ll catch
- Walleye — The main attraction. Jigging Raps and live perch work great.
- Yellow Perch — Abundant around deeper weed edges.
- Crappie — Near submerged structure in Walker Bay.
- Northern Pike — On larger tip-up baits.
Your base camp
Both Leech Lake properties put you right on the water. Walk out in the morning, check conditions, fish. Cleaning stations and second freezers at both cabins.
